The first model of the 707 could
carry 165 passengers in an all economy class configuration, almost twice as many
as the DC-7C. With it’s speed and capacity the 707 did three times the work of
the DC-7C.
Jet engines flew twice as
fast as props at a lower operating cost. Lower operating costs allowed economy
fares. It flew at 600 mph, cutting flying time in half, and at an altitude of
32,000 feet (above the weather).
On October 13, 1955 Pan Am
ordered 45 new jetliners, 25 DC-8s and 20 B707s.
Pan Am retired their last
B707 January 26, 1981. |
